Hair loss after breastfeeding, why does it happen and what can you do?

Many new mothers experience a period of increased hair loss after pregnancy and breastfeeding. It can be both worrying and frustrating when the hair that felt full during pregnancy suddenly starts to fall out in large quantities. At Hairforce, we want to explain why this happens and how you can support your hair through the recovery phase.

Why do you lose hair after breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, the hormone oestrogen affects the natural growth cycle of the hair. Normally, a certain proportion of hair is in the resting (telogen) phase, but when estrogen levels are high, more hairs remain in the growing (anagen) phase. As a result, hair often feels thicker and fuller during pregnancy.

After giving birth, and as you stop breastfeeding, estrogen levels drop back to normal. This triggers many hairs to simultaneously enter the resting phase and fall out. This type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium and is a natural, temporary process.

How long does hair loss last after breastfeeding?

Hair loss is usually noticed 2-4 months after giving birth or after stopping breastfeeding, and can last for a few months. For most people, hair growth normalizes within 6-12 months. However, even if it is temporary, it can be distressing when a lot of hair is lost in a short time.

What can you do to support your hair?

Although you cannot stop the natural hormonal change, there are ways to help your hair during recovery:

  • Nutrition: Make sure you get enough protein, iron, zinc, biotin and other essential vitamins and minerals that contribute to normal hair growth.

  • Mild hair care: Avoid harsh chemicals, heat styling and tight hairstyles that can further stress hair follicles.

  • Gentle massage: Scalp massage can stimulate blood circulation and support the functioning of hair follicles.

  • Stress management: Stress can make hair loss worse, so try to make time for recovery and rest in your daily life.
